Re:Marketing Worms - 2008/03/13 01:41 So you wanna make money with worms . Being a newby to worm raising I can't address worm business BUT I might be able to help you with marketing in general . To be a good seller you must first learn to be a good buyer . You have probably heard about companies that have departments known as R&D . Many believe that this stands for Research and Development. What it means many times is Rob and Duplicate . Buy a competitors product and take it apart . You know what they did so now you have to figure out how they did it . It seems that there are 2 big markets for worms . One is selling worms to those that want to raise them and to fishermen that want to use them for fishing (pet food will fall into this catagory also) . To see what the fishing worm business is all about you gotta buy some as if you wanted to fish . Find some guys fishing and talk about where they buy and are they happy . Fishermen will be the best guys to tell you where to shop . Then YOU go there and ask about buying them yourself .If the clerk is a talkative type try to find out as much as you can about the sales cycle . "We start selling X amount of worms in (enter month here) and the market is strong until (enter month here). Now you need to buy a bunch of worms and run home . Empty the bucket or cup or whatever they came in . Check the bedding , count the worms and make note of size . Now you have a good idea of what you need to supply to be competitive . Now you need to locate someone in the worm bait business far away enough from you so as not to be a threat to their business . If I were a florist here in Kingman I would have no problem helping someone in Texas start up a shop . They are no competition AND most people like to show what they know . The biggest piece of info you need then is what do these people charge for the worms you bought .When you have a good idea of the wholesale price you will be able to figure out if you can make a buck or not . You can test the market by offering to sell to the very place you bought from . Believe it or not stores that are happy with a supplier will many times take on another supplier as a "just in case" . You might not sell many at first BUT if your count is better the guys will ask for your worms . Make sure your container indicates who you are . The rest of the business is up to you . How far will you drive to deliver , how many times a week will you deliver etc . . Another way to get business is to deal on consignment . Leave X amount of cups of worms and don't get paid until you come back . Gladly take any unsold worms back . They are still good . Put them back in the "fattening pen" and sell them in a couple of weeks . It's bedtime so we can discuss the other way later . (If I haven't bored you to tears). Tom
