Idea that might hep continuous flow systems - 2008/03/16 21:57
One problem with continuous flow systems is where to store compost materials to pre-compost them before adding to the worms.
I suggest a series of trays. Go up!
This applies more to larger systems, though for very small systems the trays could be manually lifted.
Trays are the size of your continuous flow system, or modular according to scale, and they clip together. Wire on frames would work.
Say you pre-compost for 4 days before feeding to worms. you then want 5 trays.
The top tray is the lid.
Then under it is 1 day old compost
2 day old
3 day old
4 day old
The bottom layer, the compost now added to the worm farm, becomes the lid.
How?
The trays all clipped together are lifted as one unit. By unclipping one side of the bottom tray lifting it will tip all the compost within onto the worm farm where it can be raked flat. The other side of this tray, once free of compost, is then unclipped and removed. The remaining trays are lowered, and the base is now the lid.
You would of course need something to lift the trays, many different applications will present themselves for this according to environment. Winch off a roof probably the easiest if structurally doable. Couple of jacks or 4 hefty Joes would work too.
