Nightcrawlers will survive a long time in captivity if the conditions are right. I have been raising them for almost a year now.
If you keep them in the cups they come in, and just put them in the fridge, you are right they aint gonna be around long. But if you give them enough bedding and have a place to keep them cool, not cold, they will grow, and reproduce, and grow, and reproduce...
