Re:Worms on top of bedding? - 2008/04/26 23:53
I have had exploding worms before also, 2 things can cause it. if it looks like the ring has been chewed on or is kind of raw on top it is protein poisoning chances are the person you got from over feed to fatten them up to ship to you.... another reason that they explode is that they have not gotten enough food an air bubble forms in the gullet becuause the stomach is empty the lethargic activity that you describe sounds like protein poisoning to much worm chow or other heavy grains will cause this feed only cooked pototoes and fruits for a month if you have any worms left, turn your bed every couple of days. supposably your not suppose to but if you have dead worms on bottom it only worsens the situation to leave dead worms in there I turn my beds once or twice a week and never have a problem ( I have euros and red wigglers ) I turn the euros a lot because I count them out for retail selling and never seem to have a problem and it also seem to cut down on fruit fly production when i turn a bed it burries the little varmits after your bed is well established and going good dont turn the bed because all the castings that you want will be at the bottom and easier to harvest but until then turn it and make sure you dont have dead worms on bottom hope this helps and its not to late to save some of your crop...........p. s sorry its a long post but I have had your problem before and I know how much fun it isnt to pick out 25000 dead worms out of your bins
