sweet harvesting! - 2008/04/27 13:22
hi everyone! happy worming!
i am one of these city apartment dwellers who doesn't have space to spread out a big tarp, dump and sort etc etc. so i'd like to share my great, meditative harvesting method that takes place on my desk!
a couple of weeks ago, i took 2 tupperwares, the larger soup size from a take out place, and filled them with some of the bottom of the bin, worms and all. punched holes in the lid with a corkscrew. let em sit, with the worms enclosed making the gold ever finer.
when i'm in the mood to play some MSN texas hold em online (my chill out weakness!), i'll dump some of the compost in a small rubber bin, the kind u might soak your hand washing in. i pick thru the compost with a stick during poker hands and separate worms and cocoons, chunks that have yet to be digested from the black gold, which i scoop into a different tup. when i'm done with a game (or three!), i'll stop.
the quality of the BG is amazing: super fine and fluffy, especially after a couple of weeks just sitting there getting worked over. i dump the worms and coocoons back in my bin. in the last couple of days i've harvested about 2 lovely LBs that i am going to put outside with the april bulbs!
i love worming!
as an aside, i have a question. got some sprouts in my VC. i think they are from store bought peppers, cuz that's what the seeds stuck to the little sprouts look like.
can i plant these? will they yield vegetables? or are they weirdly the kind of pepper that is all genetically engineered to not reproduce? is there a way to know?
thanks fellow worm friends. i love that we are part of a glorious movement! woo hoo! xo rebecca
