Re:Good Paper Shredder - 2008/06/10 23:18
A shredder will last quite a while if you don't overload it . If you sit down to shred 15 pounds of newspaper you will have problems . We get a small paper here in Kingman . If I sit down and shred once a week it's not going to hurt it . One thing I do is I rip the pages about 6 inches wide by hand .Then I tear those in 10 inch strips . I then feed them through the machine sideways from the first tear . This gives me many shorter (6 inch) strips which (for me) are easier to control . The cardboard from cereal boxes , pizza boxes and just plain boxes get ripped by hand into pieces about 2 inches by 2 inches and put into the bag with the newspaper until a new bin is needed . As a matter of fact when I shred and tear I put them in plastic garbage bags with each having 4 pounds in them . Since I use 10 gallon bins that is the measure I need .I can then drill the holes needed in the bin , put screening over the holes , put something solid in the bottom (scrap plastic lattice) with a piece of close fitting cardboard on top of that and wet paper for bedding . By having the shredded paper ready I was able to avert a disaster when I realized that I had flooded one bin . I had dry shredded paper to mix in and absorb the excess water .
